Websites as a marketing tool

  1. If you have more goods to show than you can accommodate in your showroom or shop window, you can show them very cheaply on your website. Webspace is much cheaper than room space and, unlike your showroom or your shop-window, it can easily be expanded.

It is expensive to add another showroom to your upholstery shop or another shop window to your lingerie shop. By contrast, the cost of an extra web page is negligible.

  2. The running cost of a website for a year is often less than a single advertisement.

  3. A single moderately-sized magazine advertisement may cost as much as £300. The running cost of a multi-page website can be as little as £70 p.a.

  4. Your own website with your own domain name will add to your prestige with your customers and suppliers.

  5. A website puts your goods and services, your terms and conditions, your how-to-get-there information, your marketing literature, detailed specifications, etc, in front of your customers for 24 hours every day of the year.

  6. If your location is not easy to find, a handcrafted map on your website will help customers to find you. You do not have to give directions over the phone or send out leaflets with directions.

Customers are more likely to go to businesses which are easy to find.

  7. Instead of posting your sales literature by paper mail, your customers can download it for themselves. You merely email them your web address.

This method saves you paper, postage and time. Virtually everything you have to say to your customers can be on your website. Your mantra: 'Look at my website.'

  8. Your customers can see and inspect your goods on your websites and then order them by phone. This is much cheaper than having an e-commerce website (which can cost thousands of pounds) and still enables you to sell your goods all over the country if not all over the world.

  9. Your website helps you to communicate with your customers, prospects and suppliers.

  10. In combination with your website and domain name you can have any number of e-mail addresses for your partners, employees or departments.

  11. Instead of buying space for one advertisement in a newspaper or magazine, having a website is like owning the newspaper in which you can display whatever you want all the year round at no additional cost.

  12. You can use an occasional small press advertisement to refer people to your website.

  13. Print your web address on your letterheads, business cards and leaflets, so that people can see what you have to offer without having to visit you first. They will visit you later.

  14. A website is particularly effective if intelligently used in combination with other forms of marketing: business card, letterhead, leaflets, small press advertisements, in networking environments, press publicity, etc.

Example 1: If some one asks you about your business (even in social situations), simply hand over your business card, which contains your website address. Your website says all there is to know.

Example 2: Instead of publishing a full page or multi-page advertisement, run a small advertisement containing your web address. Your website will do all the talking.

Example 3: Get the local newspaper or your trade magazine to publish a story about you. If they publish your website address, all your goods and services will be publicised.
